Stump Grinding in Melbourne
Tree removal almost always leaves a stump. Most clients want it ground out on the same visit — same crew, same disposal, no second call-out. Stump grinding adds $150-$600 depending on stump diameter and root spread, but only if you choose to add it.
See stump grinding service →When Tree Felling Is the Right Call vs Sectional Dismantling
Felling — dropping a tree whole in a single controlled fall — looks dramatic but is actually the lower-risk option when the site supports it. Sectional dismantling — climbing the tree and lowering it piece by piece — is the only choice for built-up urban sites. Knowing which one your job needs avoids overpaying for the wrong technique.
Felling makes sense when: the drop zone is clear for at least 1.3× the tree height in the direction of fall; the ground is level enough that the tree won’t roll after impact; there are no overhead power lines within 10 metres of the felling arc; and the tree’s natural lean is consistent with the planned direction. These conditions are common on outer-suburban acreage, semi-rural blocks, and bushland edges, but rare on standard Melbourne residential lots.
How a controlled fell actually works: the feller cuts a notch on the side of the trunk facing the intended drop direction (the “face cut”), then cuts horizontally from the opposite side (“back cut”) leaving a thin holding hinge that controls the fall trajectory. The hinge thickness, depth, and angle of the face cut determine where the tree lands within a margin of about ±5 degrees. On a properly felled tree the trunk lands within a 2-metre target circle.
When felling goes wrong: a back-cut made too high above the face cut creates a “barber chair” where the trunk splits vertically and jumps backward. A face cut made too shallow lets the tree pivot in an uncontrolled direction. Both are killed-by-tree incidents and are why felling is restricted to qualified Cert III+ arborists with experience on the specific species.
Sectional dismantling is required when: structures or fences are within the tree’s fall radius; the tree is close to powerlines or telecommunications cabling; the drop zone is on a slope; or council rules require minimal impact on surrounding vegetation. Each section gets cut, lowered on rigging line, and either chipped on site or hauled to the kerb.
Cost difference: a fell-and-process job on an open site runs 30-50% cheaper than sectional dismantling on the same-sized tree because the climbing and rigging time is eliminated. If the site genuinely supports a fell, that’s the cost-effective answer. If it doesn’t, paying for proper sectional dismantling is the only safe option.

Got the space? Let’s drop it in one
Tree felling is faster and cheaper than sectional removal, but only works on properties with proper drop zones. Rob calls you back the same day, comes out to inspect the site, confirms whether felling is safe given the surroundings, and quotes a fixed price.
If felling isn’t safe, we’ll switch to sectional removal — same price agreement, different method.
